Today Latimeria studio combines modern technology with traditional craftsmanship in a way that isincreasingly rare today. Our serving pieces begin with precision processes such as laser cutting, allowing us to create clean and accurate forms from stainless steel. After that, every piece continues its journey by hand in our Finnish workshop.
Grinding, polishing, bending and coloring are all done manually using techniques refined throughdecades of experience. This combination of technology and handwork gives each object bothprecision and individuality.
For us, technology is not a replacement for craftsmanship, but a tool that allows handmade work toreach an even higher level of quality and detail. The result is functional metalwork with a distinctlyhuman touch: sculptural serving pieces made slowly, responsibly, and built to last for generations.
Latimeria studio has been creating handcrafted metal objects in Finland for over 30 years. What began as a one-person workshop has gradually grown into a family studio, where the second generation is now also involved in continuing the work, craftsmanship, and traditions forward.
”In the beginning I made all of my products from recycled materials, and a large part of mytime was spent searching for suitable materials from scrapyards.
The products often evolved into different forms as the materials changed as well, since the same material was never available in large quantities.”
”Already in the early stages, I began making serving utensils and cutlery. Crafting a fork by hand may seem simple, but creating one that is truly functional requires a great deal of skill and experience.”
”In addition to our standard collection, we also create complete handcrafted cutlery sets that can be assembled according to the customer’s wishes something that is exceptionally rare today in a world dominated by mass production.”
”Even today, all of our products are still handmade in Finland in the workshop, where manyof the tools and machines have been used daily for decades. We have always been fascinated by the idea of turning a material often seen as cold and industrial into something warm, personal, and expressive objects that carry both function and feeling.”
“Poetry in Metal” means seeing metal as more than just a material. To us, it is a way of giving cold steel a softer, more human expression through craftsmanship, form, and detail.
Like poetry, our objects are not only meant to be functional. They are meant to create a feeling. A certain balance in the hand, a surface shaped by time and work, a quiet presence on the table. Each piece carries traces of the maker and the process behind it.
“Poetry in Metal” is the idea that even something as strong and industrial as steel can become delicate, timeless, and emotional when shaped slowly by hand.
